It is my second day in Toronto, and although I have only seen the North York area and Davisville, I am enjoying my first visit to Toronto. The 27-28 degree weather may be making me biased, but it is definitely a treat to escape breezy Vancouver for the full-blown summer heat here.
My friend Katherine really wanted to take me to this Italian restaurant she loves, even though we’re leaving for Italy tomorrow. She has yet to bring me to a restaurant that is less than fantastic, so I happily agreed.
We hopped on the subway for a short ride to Summerhill station, and then walked five minutes to arrive at Terroni.
This was my salad Nizzarda with arugula, italian tuna, potatoes, eggs, red onion, tomatoes, olives, green beans, and anchovies. Looking at this photo makes me want to eat it all over again. The potatoes were perfectly cooked and seasoned with a little pepper and lemon juice. They would easily have been great on their own as a light summer potato salad.
This was my Spaghetti in Canna a Mare with fresh clams, mussels, calamari, scallops and tiger shrimp in a light tomato sauce. The spaghetti looked like it was mushy but it was actually perfectly al dente. Its texture was one of my favourite things about this dish. The calamari was exceptionally good.
That is a mountain of baked oyster mushrooms! This is Katherine’s favourite dish at Terroni, the Funghi Assoluti. The baked oyster mushrooms are lightly covered in bread crumbs and are sitting atop a bed of arugula tossed with extra-virgin olive oil and vinegar. These oyster mushrooms were unbelievably good. Earthy, crispy, and a little cheesy thanks to the sprinkling of parmigiano on top.
I am really excited for the food we’ll be eating in Italy, but this was a fantastic Italian lunch, and I definitely want to go back to try their pizzas.
Tomorrow we leave for Florence!
